What is the Hindu Panchang?

The Hindu Panchang is the traditional daily Hindu calendar used to track planetary movements, calculate auspicious times, and determine the dates of festivals.

The 5 Limbs of Panchang

The word "Panchang" translates to "five limbs". Checking the Panchang involves looking at these five elements:

  • Today Tithi (Lunar Day): Dictates the phase of the Moon. Auspicious activities are often tied to specific Tithis.
  • Today Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion): The constellation the Moon is currently transiting.
  • Yoga: Formed by the combined longitude of the Sun and Moon.
  • Karana: Half of a Tithi. Essential for determining exact timings.
  • Vaar (Weekday): The day of the week, ruled by a specific planet.

Rahu Kaal & Shubh Muhurat

A Shubh Muhurat is an auspicious window of time ideal for starting new ventures.

Rahu Kaal is the most critical inauspicious period to be aware of. Avoid starting important work during this time.

Sunrise & Sunset (Suryoday & Suryast)

In the Hindu calendar, a new day strictly begins at sunrise. Knowing the exact sunrise and sunset is vital.
